Circolo Popolare: the best Italian food I’ve tasted in London

This lively and popular Instagram worthy spot is well worth the hype, serving some of most authentic tasting Italian dishes in the city.

REVIEW

Round the corner from Tottenham Court Road station and Oxford Street is where you'll find Circolo Popolare - one of three Italian restaurants owned by Big Mamma Group (Gloria Trattoria & Ave Mario Sex). If you're after somewhere with beautiful decor serving stunning Italian food, this is the place for you. Stepping into Circolo Popolare for the first time it was almost like I'd transported straight to Italy. The entire experience here makes you feel like you're dining at a restaurant on the Sicilian coastline.

THE FOOD

The menu at Circolo Popolare changes every month and the pasta is made fresh in house every day. It isn't bursting with a lot of options but there's still something for everyone on the menu with meat, vegetarian and gluten free dishes available.

For my starter (anti pasti), I ordered Everyday I'm Trufflin' - deep-fried crocchettes stuffed with bechamel (white sauce), caciocavallo cheese, parmigiano (hard cheese) and a melting truffle cream centre. I'd recommend this dish if you're a big fan of truffle like myself. The flavour of the truffle is strong but didn't overpower the taste of the three cheeses. I fell in love after the first bite. For my main (primi piatti), I went with the Bomba Rossa - tomato and spaghetti dish with parmigiano and fresh basil. Sure it wasn't as exciting as the Pasta Trecce Al Vitello (the dish two of my friends ordered) or their house special truffle pasta, but this dish was easily one of the freshest tasting tomato based pasta dishes I've ever eaten.

THE INCOMPARABLE LEMON PIE

The dessert menu is a well crafted selection of sweet treats so make sure you save room for one. If you've come across Circolo Popolare on Instagram or TikTok before you will most definitely already be familiar with this pie which has gone viral quite a few times. The Incomparable Lemon Pie is a sharp and zingy tart with a more than generous portion of meringue.  The pie was to die for but I would've enjoyed this dish even more if the lemon layer was bigger. The meringue layer was huge and the lemon is my favourite part of this particular dessert. The pie was so large all four of us ate some and still didn't finish it!

OVERALL

The only slight downside to Circolo Popolare were the cocktails which to be frank weren't the best. We ordered the Rum Service Mojito and the Purple Rain. Both cost around under a tenner which was less than I expected but were small and tasted like juice. To be completely honest the food was that great I didn't care so I wouldn't let this deter you from going.

I'll definitely be visiting Circolo Popolare again in the future. I'd been waiting to go here forever and it did not disappoint. It sucks a little that our dishes probably won't be on the menu next time I visit but I can't wait to see what's available to order in the future. I must warn you though, this place is very popular and is always packed from what I've seen. They do keep some walk in tables available on the day but if you're eager I'd recommend securing a booking well in advance.
