My 25th Birthday Celebration at Yauatcha City

This all-day Chinese fine dining dim sum restaurant is undoubtedly the standout of Broadgate Circle.

Located just a two minute walk from Liverpool Street station, Yauatcha City is an all-day dim sum dining experience perfect for group dinners, lunch on the weekend with friends or a quick bite to eat after work on a Friday evening.

This year I had to be convinced to do something for my birthday by my friends. After the last year and a half that we've all had, I'm craving enjoyment with my favourite people as much as possible so I'm glad they were able to convince me. This was actually supposed to be a surprise for me until one of my friends blew it by accident thank God lmao.

Yauatcha, part of the Hakkasan Group, were able to accommodate 30 people and gave us the option to hire out the private terrace which was perfect for us - exactly what I was looking for. I must say, the booking manager who oversaw the preparations for this dinner was fantastic and really came through with helping me put everything together at such short notice.

For a party of our size, I was required to choose from a selection of set menu's so I decided to go with the Signature Set Menu. From there, I had a wide range of dishes to select for the evening. My selections for the dinner are listed below:

Steamed dim sum: Scallop shui mai, seafood black truffle dumpling, pork and prawn shui mai

Fried and baked dim sum: Venison puff, sesame prawn toast, crispy duck roll

Small eat: Soft shell crab bao

Main: Steamed chilli prawn with garlic, kung pao chicken with cashew nut served with steamed Jasmine rice and pak choi

Signature dessert: selection of cakes

The food was amazing. I'd even go as far as to call it faultless because I literally don't have any criticism to offer on that basis. All of the dim sum was beautiful. I try to avoid red meat so I didn't eat the Venison Puff but everybody who tried it was raving about it. My personal favourite was the Sesame Prawn Toast which was an actual prawn with bread layered on top coated with sesame seeds. Very different from how the dish is cooked at local Chinese takeaways. My other highlight was the Kung Pao Chicken with Cashew Nut. If you're a fan of sweet and sour chicken, this dish is for you. It's just as sweet but more flavoursome with a nice crunch thanks to the added cashew nuts.

Unfortunately the service (which was slow but decent enough at the start of the dinner) didn't match up to the amazing food. The restaurant manager complained and had an issue with us paying individually for drinks at the end of the night, which I thought was quite cheeky because it's a standard procedure. The waiters on the night also billed everybody's drinks that had been paid for straight away instead of removing them from our minimum spend which made absolutely no sense. On top of that, the manager only admitted this error after we had paid for part of this incorrect bill that we were presented with. I won't go into this too much because I will be making an official complaint and I also don't want to take away from the amazing evening my friends and I had overall but this was very disappointing.

Aside from the commotion at the end, I'd still say I had a good dining experience at Yauatcha City. It was my second time visiting this restaurant and I enjoyed the food and drinks a lot more this time around. The dishes were quality, the cocktails were nice and the ambience on the terrace especially was top notch. If you enjoy food from similar restaurants like China Tang and Hakkasan, you'll definitely love the food here. I will say that some may find the a la carte menu to be overpriced but I definitely think it's worth it. Especially when you factor in the ambience. The service has left a sour taste in my mouth so I'll probably be going to the Soho branch next time I'm craving food from here.

My birthday cake was made by Ny's Treats (@ny_treats__). This was a vanilla sponge layered with homemade salted caramel and a salted caramel buttercream - topped off with Toffee popcorn and caramel chocolates. Trust me when I say this cake was 10/10. Literally amazing. Make sure you follow Ny's Treats on Instagram and get your orders in!
