Boundary Rooftop: cosy spot hidden in the heart of Shoreditch

With panoramic views across East London and the City, Boundary Rooftop is a nice little cosy rooftop spot tucked away from the busy streets of trendy Shoreditch.

Cuisine: Mediterranean

Located just a few minutes from Bethnal Green Road, a quick lift ride to the 4th floor of The Boundary Hotel takes you to one of the hotel's accompanying restaurants. The Glass Orangery (indoor dining area) is usually open all year round which doesn't lack with the view of the city and is perfect for when the weather outside isn't so great. As indoor dining isn't allowed in the U.K. until 17th May, I was seated in a cosy sofa area of the garden terrace. The outdoor area is complete with cushions, heaters and wind shields.

The menu at The Boundary is Mediterranean-inspired, offering a well-crafted selection of classic starters, grilled sticks, meats/fish and sides dishes. I decided to order dishes that I don't normally go for this time around.

For my starter, I went with the Burrata served with a tomato coulis and oregano - Italian cheese made with cream and mozzarella. The tomato coulis was rich in flavour and complimented the mildness of the cheese however I do prefer warm starters so I probably wouldn't order this dish again. The Spiced Chicken Grilled Stick was grilled perfectly. Tiny bit too salty for my taste but I still enjoyed it non-the less. For my main, I ordered the Balsamic Glazed Duck Breast served with nectarine and cress. The meat was grilled well (medium rare) but I think the meal was in need of something sweet to bring all the flavours together better. I would've enjoyed this meal a lot more if the balsamic glaze was made with honey.

As I've mentioned before I don't have that much of a sweet tooth but funnily enough this is the second time in a row the dessert has been the highlight of my dining experience. The waiter recommended the Strawberry & Lemon Meringue Vacherin, calling this dish one of the best things on the menu and he wasn't lying. It's a pretty simple dish in terms of execution but the juxtaposing flavours of the strawberry and lemon is what brought this dessert to life.

All in all, I enjoyed my visit to Boundary Rooftop. The food was good although nothing blew my mind if I'm being completely honest. Two of the cocktails I ordered were great. I'd personally recommend the Old Nichol Kanu cocktail - a refreshing and sweet mix of Havana Club 3 year old rum, Koko Kanu, passion fruit, mango and lemon.

The staff here are friendly and have a good knowledge of the menu. The beautiful view and summery theme of the orangery and garden rooftop is one of the best things about this place. I will definitely return in the summer when it's a little warmer but I'll be ordering different dishes from the menu.
